(AMERICAN INDIANS.) The Life of General W.A. Bowles.

"AN INTERESTING ACCOUNT OF A MOST UNUSUAL MAN"--STREETER (AMERICAN INDIANS.) The Life of General W.A. Bowles. 31 pages. 8vo, disbound; foxing; early owners' inscriptions on title page. New York, 1803

  • Notes: First American edition, following a London printing in "Public Characters." William Augustus Bowles (1763–1805) was born in Maryland, and resisted the Revolution as a Loyalist in Pensacola, FL. He became close with Florida's Cherokees and Muscogees, operated a trading post, and married the daughter of a Muscogee chief. In 1795, he was asked by the British government to organize an independent Indian nation on America's southern frontier to keep the young nation in check. He declared himself head of the State of Muskogee in 1799 and continued in opposition to the United States and Spain until 1803. This first American edition appends a report of the capture of Bowles dated 13 June 1803. Howes B667 ("b"); Sabin 7083; Streeter sale, II:1197 (the last known copy at auction, in 1967). 6 copies in OCLC.
