(AMERICAN INDIANS.) Washington, George. Official printing of the Treaty of Greenville which ended the Northwest Indian War. 8 pages. Folio, disbound; minor toning and wear, minimal dampstaining on lower inner corner, manuscript page numbers. [Philadelphia: John Fenno, 22 December 1795]

  • Notes: The Treaty of Greenville, signed on 3 August 1795, ended a ten-year struggle over the Northwest Territory. In the wake of the American army''s victory at the Battle of Falling Timbers, a confederation of Indian tribes ceded claims to a vast swath of territory including much of modern Ohio. This printing is headed with the president''s name, and the text begins with "To all to whom these presents shall come--Greeting: Whereas a treaty of peace and friendship between the United States of America and the tribes of Indians called the Wyandots, Delawares, Shawanoes, Ottowas, Chipewas, Putawatimes, Miamis, Eel-river, Weeás Kickapoos, Piankashaws, and Kaskaskias." The treaty is signed in type by General Anthony Wayne and several of his aides including future president William Henry Harrison, as well as dozens of chiefs, and then concludes with the ratification signatures in type of George Washington and Timothy Pickering. Evans 29742; Sabin 96605; Streeter sale III:1318 (the only other copy known at auction, in 1967).
