Alfred Dolge [1848-1922] was a major industrialist, inventor, author, and pioneer of influential progressive social welfare programs for his workers. He came to the US in 1868, having worked in German piano factories, and located his own piano business in upstate New York. He became a major supplier of felt and piano boards to the trade - also made pianos - creating a large enterprise that led to the town he had largely created being re-named Dolgeville in 1887.
