(AMERICAN INDUSTRY.) Gavit & Co. This Certifies that this Diploma is Awarded as a Premium to S. Butterfield by the Utica Mechanics' Association, for the Best Carpet. Print and manuscript broadside prize certificate with a finely engraved vignette representing various industrial advances of the early 19th century. 17¾x13½ inches sheet size; embossed foil seal of the Utica Mechanics Association and signed by three officers, Dolphus Bennett, Harvey Kirkland, and Otis Manchester; various signs of age. [Albany and Utica, 1840s]

  • Notes: Samuel Butterfield was an English-born weaver and tradesman working in Oneida County, New York. Butterfield is generally credited with introducing the first ingrain carpeting loom to the state in the 1830s. His talents were abundant and clearly impressed the judges at an early Mechanic's Association trade show.
