(AMERICAN REVOLUTION--1775.) Invoices for houses rented by New Hampshire minutemen during the first months of the Siege of Boston. 4 Manuscripts Signed, each about 6½ x 8 inches, docketed on verso; each with horizontal folds, minimal wear. Medford, MA, June-August 1775

  • Notes: Colonial militia units poured into the Boston area between the Battles of Lexington and Concord on 19 April 1775 and the Battle of Bunker Hill on 17 June. Among them was the New Hampshire regiment of minutemen formed by Colonel John Stark in April 1775, which played a crucial role at Bunker's Hill. In Massachusetts, many of the troops were housed in private homes. Offered here are four invoices addressed to the Colony of New Hampshire from homeowners in Medford, MA a few miles east of Lexington and north of Boston.

John Buchanan charged for "Part of Capt. Reed's company barracking in my house" from 1 May to 1 August, and also for "building cabbins, 8 days work."

John Smith charged for "rent for 1 half of my house for the use of Capt. Areh Town's co. of Col. Stark's regt" from 10 to 23 June, and also for the care of "sick & wounded of Col. Stark's and Col. Reed's reg't one month," and "wood supplied."

Isaac Winship charged for "rent for a house & barn for the use of Capt. Ben Floyd's Company & after Capt. Stiles d'o in Col. Jno. Stark's reg't" from 4 May to 19 June, followed by 12 days for "Capt. Jas. Norris co. of Col. Poor's reg't", as well as expenses for wood, salt hay, and "the use of a bed for sick & assisting & nursing."

Finally, Gershom Williams charged for "the rent of one end of house for the use of Capt. Baldwin's Co. for 13 weeks & 3 days & Capt. Abbot's d'o for one month, both in Col. Stark's reg't," from 2 May to 4 August. This is the only invoice not naming Medford as the location, but a Gershom Williams was married there in 1793.
