(AMERICAN REVOLUTION--1776.) A N.bE. View of the Fort on the Western End of Sulivans Island with the Disposition of His Majesty's Fleet . . . During the Attack on the 28th of June 1776. Engraving, 10 1/2 x 17 inches; several closed tears, folds, wrinkling, minor soiling, laid down on linen. London: William Faden, 10 August 1776

  • Notes: A view of American-held Sullivan's Island which protected Charleston, SC. The key describes the events of the Battle of Fort Sullivan, in which the British Navy under Commodore Peter Parker attempted to take the fort. A day of bombardment was ineffectual, and the attacking British suffered 220 killed and wounded before departing from the scene. A flag designed by the American commander William Moultrie flew throughout the bombardment; when the flagpole was destroyed, a sergeant waved it to inspire the troops. The fort was later renamed Fort Moultrie in honor of the American commander.
This view shows the fort and surrounding islands, as well as the locations of the British vessels (all described in the key below). The famous Moultrie flag is shown waving from the fort. The view was issued both separately and as a plate from Faden's Atlas of Battles of the American Revolution.
