  • Notes: Joseph Rice served in an unidentified Connecticut militia unit. He wrote this letter two days after the British landed at Brooklyn, and three days before the forces clashed in the Battle of Long Island. In part: "It is a very sickly time with us here. There has six died out of our regiment since we come here, two of them out of our company. . . . The regalars have landed on Long Island and our men make all the preparation to defeat them that is possible. Merriden milisha has got in all well. There is a fine number of men on our side, and with the help of God we shall be able to conquer our enimy." For related family papers, see lot 125.
