[Steuben, Friedrich von.] Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States. 7 (of 8) plates. 154, [9] pages. 12mo, original 1/4 calf, worn, lacking much of backstrip; contemporary wastepaper endpapers from a June 1775 issue of Pennsylvania Magazine, moderate wear and dampstaining, lacking plate IV, the remaining plates all more or less defective including the loss of large sections of plates I, VI and VII, rear free endpaper detached; early signatures of Capt. Edward Yarbrough on front pastedown, title page and final blank, 1850 signatures of 1st Lieutenant Caleb Basinger on final blank, 1927 inscriptions by J.T. Wyatt on pages 5, 51, and final pastedown.   • Notes: first edition of the renowned drill manual prepared at Valley Forge by Washington''s inspector-general Steuben, who was brought in from Prussia to bring military discipline to the American volunteers. The original owner, Captain Edward Yarbrough or Yarborough, served in the 3rd North Carolina Regiment through almost the duration of the war, and had spent the winter of 1777-78 drilling under Steuben''s system at Valley Forge.
