Order that "that fifteen hundred men should be raised to join the Connecticut battalions."

[Hartford, CT]: [Hudson and Goodwin], 30 June 1780
Letterpress broadside, 13 x 8¼ inches, signed in type by clerk Jedidiah Strong, with manuscript letter on verso; worn, folds, wrinkles, several tape repairs not substantially affecting text; uncut.

  • Notes: The order, "At a meeting of the governor and Council of Safety," adjusts a prior militia recruitment order after General Washington had requested an additional 1,000 Continental troops from Connecticut as "indispensibly necessary for the safety of this and the United States."

This copy of the broadside was sent to Colonel Noadiah Hooker of Farmington, CT, who then penned a 3 July 1780 letter to Captain Rezin Gridley on verso explaining the act, and noting that his company was required to send one private to Danbury for the militia, plus "one private for the Continental Army."

Evans 16746. 3 in OCLC, and none traced at auction.
