(AMERICAN REVOLUTION--HISTORY.) History of the American Revolution, Including an Impartial Examination of the Causes,

(AMERICAN REVOLUTION--HISTORY.) History of the American Revolution, Including an Impartial Examination of the Causes, compiled from sections of a serial titled "The Monthly Register, and Review of the United States." XII issues complete in one volume. [2], iii, [5], 384, vii pages. 8vo, contemporary ½ calf over marbled boards, minor wear; moderate foxing and dampstaining, rehinged. Charleston, SC: Bounetheau, January 1805 to July 1806

  • Notes: A significant history of the events leading up to the Revolution.

You can leave it at that, or share in some bibliographical complexity. This was initially issued as a serial, one of the first published in the American South, edited by Stephen Carpenter. As far as we can determine, the serial was issued with the title "Monthly Review and Literary Miscellany of the United States" starting in January 1805. Each of the early issues was issued in two discrete sections, separately paginated: a literary section and this "Monthly Register, and Review of the United States," which was itself divided between a 29-chapter history of the prologue to the Revolution and a more contemporary "History of the Passing Times." Subscribers were encouraged in the Prospectus to separate the two main sections and bind them together; a "History of the American Revolution" title page was provided for the purpose. This arrangement lasted through 12 issues spread out over 19 months, at which point the Revolution section was discontinued. Soon after the publication moved to New York, changed hands, and disappeared at the end of 1807.

The short story: this looks mostly like a book, but was compiled as directed from sections of a quasi-monthly magazine, and the Revolution sections alternate with current events sections. The last one we find at auction was an incomplete set in 1929. Lomazow 66; Shaw & Shoemaker 10891.
