- Notes: "I receivd your letter and your French Friend. I am always happy to hear of your health and welfare, but for God''s sake why did you send this Frenchman? He is a horrible incumbrance. We cannot tell what to do with him. He can be of no service . . . I hope we shall have no more of ''em. I am concern''d to hear of party''s residing amongst you at Philadelphia. I was in hopes that monster wou''d have never dar''d to shew its head amongst you. It is said that Toryism again stalks abroad, and that your Quakers and non Associators are to be excus''d both from fighting and paying. Not a bad bargain this. If the Ministry [?] gain the Victory They are to be consider''d and rewarded as Friends and if the Champions of Liberty succeed, these worthy Citizen are to partake all the blessings of Freedom which have been obtain''d at the expense of the blood and treasure of other Men. I would have thrown the whole Society into Gehanna before I would have consented to it . . ."
