(AMERICAN REVOLUTION--NEW YORK.) Wisner, Henry; and Gilbert Livingston. Report on the defective Fort Montgomery chain

(AMERICAN REVOLUTION--NEW YORK.) Wisner, Henry; and Gilbert Livingston. Report on the defective Fort Montgomery chain across the Hudson River. Document Signed as members of a committee of New York's Provincial Congress. One page, 6 1/4 x 8 1/4, apparently lacking the top part of the sheet; mount remnant of left edge verso. (JMR) Np, 12 December 1776

  • Notes: In November 1776, the Continental Army placed a heavy chain across the Hudson River to prevent British vessels from proceeding up the river. The chain broke after only a few hours in the water. A special committee of New York's Congress was convened to determine the reason; this is their report. They conclude that "the chain was broke by the strength of the tide" and that "the chains braking was not owing to any fault in the smiths work, but to want of strength in the iron." A more successful chain was run across the river at West Point in 1778.
