(AMERICAN REVOLUTION--PRELUDE.) An Act to Amend and Render More Effectual . . . An Act for Punishing Mutiny and Desertion.

THE QUARTERING ACT OF 1765 (AMERICAN REVOLUTION--PRELUDE.) An Act to Amend and Render More Effectual . . . An Act for Punishing Mutiny and Desertion. [1], 579-596 pages. Folio, disbound; stitch holes in inner margin. 5 George III, cap. XXXIII. London, 1765

  • Notes: Second only to the Stamp Act in causing unrest in the colonies, this act provided that the expense of quartering the British Army in North America should be charged upon the colonies, and that troops could be placed in "uninhabited houses, outhouses, barns, or other buildings" without the consent of the property owner. Two years later, failure to comply with this act resulted in the suspension of the New York legislature. This act would be amended by the Quartering Act of 1774 (one of the Intolerable Acts), which added the proviso that troops could be housed in private residences.
