(AMERICAN REVOLUTION--PRELUDE.) Corrie, John. Letter describing the implementation of the Stamp Act in South Carolina. Autograph Letter Signed to Newton & Gordon, wine merchants located on the Portuguese island of Madeira. 2 pages, 9 x 7 1/2 inches, plus integral address leaf with no postal markings; folds, minor wear. Charleston, SC, 6 February 1766

  • Notes: Charlestown merchant John Corrie reports in part: "Our port has been shutt (on acc''t of the Stamp Act which you no doubt have heard of). Ever since the arrivall of vessells with Portugall licences, a few vessells got cleared out before the 1st November when the act became in force, but it was impossible to gett any freight in them. The port was yesterday opened without stamped paper being used, which will enable people to venture their own property to sea without legall clearance. It''s quite uncertain when the port will be opened in a legall manner." The remainder of the letter relates to the wine trade.

--4 other wine trade letters addressed to Newton & Gordon by Charlestown merchants Daniel & Isaac Bourdeaux and James Carson, 1771-73.
