(AMERICAN REVOLUTION--PRELUDE.) The Pennsylvania Journal; and the Weekly Advertiser.

UNITE OR DIE (AMERICAN REVOLUTION--PRELUDE.) The Pennsylvania Journal; and the Weekly Advertiser. #1683. 4 pages, 16 x 10 inches, on one folding sheet, disbound; minor foxing. Philadelphia: William and Thomas Bradford, 8 March 1775

  • Notes: The Pennsylvania Journal paid tribute to the New-York Journal (see lot 29 above) with their own woodcut version of the "Unite or Die" masthead, which they used from 12 July 1774 to 18 October 1775. This issue, just six weeks before Lexington and Concord, is largely devoted to the coming conflict. Several loyalist pamphleteers and publishers, including James Rivington, are refuted at length and given a "friendly warning, that they may desist in time, otherwise their names will be handed down to posterity with the infamy they merit." A protest is issued against Governor Gage's placement of soldiers in Marshfield, MA in an alleged time of peace. A letter from Boston boasts that "we have at least twenty thousand Minute-Men, that are ready to be turned into the field at a moment's warning."
