(AMERICAN REVOLUTION--PRINTS.)
Hand-colored etching, 9.5 x 11.5 inches; "Philadelphia" written faintly in ink along bottom margin, minor soiling and staining, and a bit of overenthusiastic work by the colorist; remnants of early mounts on verso corners. Philadelphia: engraved by "Sans Souci" after "Corbut," 1778
- Notes: An allegorical winged figure of France pursues an unpleasant-looking group of British soldiers, as joyous liberated Americans dance around a liberty cap in front of Philadelphia. The image later found its way back to France, where it was closely imitated in a 1791 print celebrating the French Revolution. See J.D. Harden, "Liberty Caps and Liberty Trees," Past and Present, February 1995.
