(AMERICAN REVOLUTION--PRINTS.) Fisher, Alvan; artist. Suite of 4 views of La Grange, home of the Marquis de Lafayette.

AMONG THE FIRST LITHOGRAPHS PRINTED IN AMERICA (AMERICAN REVOLUTION--PRINTS.) Fisher, Alvan; artist. Suite of 4 views of La Grange, home of the Marquis de Lafayette. 4 lithographs, each 10 1/2 x 13 1/2 inches, each captioned "Lagrange" and subcaptioned "East'n View," "North-Western-View," "South Western View," and North'n View"; moderate foxing, eastern view dampstained with long horizontal crease and short repaired tear. [Boston, September 1826]

  • Notes: Alvan Fisher (1792-1886) of Dedham, MA was one of the first important American landscape artists. Lafayette visited Dedham during his grand tour of the United States in 1824. This apparently inspired Fisher to visit France the following year (his first and only journey abroad) with the intention of painting four views of La Grange from different perspectives. While in France, he had the opportunity to visit a French lithographer and saw firsthand the potential of this new medium. He commissioned the lithographer Isadore Deroy to draw his paintings on stone, and then in September 1826 brought the stone back to Boston to be printed by John and William S. Pendleton. "Very early examples of lithographs printed in the United States"--Adelson, "Home on La Grange: Alvan Fisher's Lithographs of Lafayette's Residence in France," in Antiques CXXXIV:1 (July 1988), pages 152-7.
