(AMERICAN REVOLUTION.) A Payroll from Capt. Will'm Goodwrich's Comp'y in Brig. Gen'l Arnold's Detachment on Continental Service.

INDEPENDENCE DAY PAYROLL FROM ARNOLD'S QUEBEC EXPEDITION (AMERICAN REVOLUTION.) A Payroll from Capt. Will'm Goodwrich's Comp'y in Brig. Gen'l Arnold's Detachment on Continental Service. Document Signed by Jonathan Trumbull Jr. as Paymaster General. 2 pages, 15 3/4 x 12 1/4 inches, in one sheet; minimal wear. (MRS) Albany, NY, 4 July 1776

  • Notes: Captain Goodrich's company was part of a Massachusetts regiment which accompanied Benedict Arnold on the ill-fated 1775 mission to capture Canada. This is a transcript made in July 1776 of the original company payroll, presented by Goodrich's lieutenant David Pixley to the Paymaster General for settlement. Underneath the payroll is Pixley's "acco. with the public," including the payroll and other charges such as "Canada Bounty", signed and dated by Trumbull on 4 July 1776 (please note the date). The payroll lists 83 officers and enlisted men, their ranks, number of days in the service, monthly pay rate, and total pay due. For many of them, their date of death, capture, or discharge is also given. Captain Goodrich is listed as "Taken 31 Dec'r", the fateful date of the Battle of Quebec--which explains why he unable to present the payroll in Albany himself.
