(AMERICAN REVOLUTION.) Lovell, Josiah. A Massachusetts private announces his regiment's departure for Quebec. Autograph Letter Signed to "father & mother, brothers & sisters." One page, 12 1/4 x 7 inches; worn with slight loss, full separation at one fold, small early repair on verso. (MRS) New York, 16 April 1776

  • Notes: A private in the Continental Army writes home to his family in Abington, MA: "I have nothing strange to write, only Conl Greaton Regnt is ordred to march to Quebec & with him is a going forth Bonds Pattisons & Webbs regmint. It is long fatigueing voyage. We are to embark on board the transports & to go as far as Albany & so I bid you all a farewell." In closing, he signs himself "your dutiful son till death." Lovell served in Colonel John Greaton's 3rd Massachusetts Regiment, also known as the 24th Continental Regiment. He survived the war to collect a pension in Maine. Provenance: Sotheby's sale, 28 April 1981, lot 142 to the consignor.
