(AMERICAN REVOLUTION.) Troop return for Delancey's First Battalion of Loyalists.

(AMERICAN REVOLUTION.) Troop return for Delancey's First Battalion of Loyalists. Printed form, 7 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches, completed in manuscript; signed by Alexander Innes as Inspector-General. Charleston, SC, 15 February 1782

  • Notes: Oliver De Lancey was a New York Loyalist who led a brigade in support of the king. This return of his First Battalion was compiled four months after Yorktown. The fighting had essentially ended, but the king's troops still occupied garrisons in Charleston and elsewhere. The numbers tell the story of a defeated army, with 101 men in American prisons, 44 sick, 200 dead, 167 discharged, and 350 deserted--and only 139 rank and file troops ready for action.
