(AMERICAN REVOLUTION.) Yates, Robert. Letter on the construction of fire rafts to obstruct the British on the Hudson River. Autograph Letter Signed to Christopher Tappan. One page, 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches, plus integral partial address leaf; repaired marginal seal tear and other smaller holes, address leaf missing bottom blank area, mount remnant on verso. (MRS) Claverack, NY, 24 July 1776

  • Notes: Yates, Tappan, and Robert R. Livingston were all members of the recently appointed "Secret Committee of the New York Convention," which was tasked by General Washington with obstructing the British advance up the Hudson, including the deployment of flaming rafts. This letter reads in full: "Mr. R. Livingston informs me that his brother John Livingston will undertake to furnish us with the timber necessary to compleat the rafts we had intended to be made, and from which we desisted because we concluded it would take up too much time. This last objection his brother offers to remove by having the timber in the river by next Monday. You have therefore my consent as one of the member of the committee to make such agreement with him for that purpose as you may conceived reasonable. It may probably be necessary for you to come over to superintend the work." Yates later became a judge and one of New York's leading Anti-Federalists in opposition to the Constitution.
