(AMERICAN WRITERS) Portrait of Walt Whitman (1819-1892).

(AMERICAN WRITERS)
Portrait of Walt Whitman (1819-1892). By G. Frank Pearsall (1841-1927). Silver print, the image measuring 6¼x4½ inches (15.9x11.4 cm.), with the sitter's credit in pencil and the Culver Pictures stamp, barcode, and label on verso. Circa 1870; printed circa 1920

  • Condition: This well-known portrait of iconic American writer Walt Whitman is in very good condition. The print is contrasty and bright, with bright highlight and deep black tones.

In strong, raking light, the surface of the print evidences a few superfical surface imperfections related to its Culver Pictures provenance. Except a tiny spec of residue on the shoulder and a faint diagonal impression in the upper left background (not visible when viewing the work directly), they are primarily confined to the corners of the prints: cluster of tiny creases with some emulsion loss on three corners.

The print retains no margins, and its edges also evidence a few superficial tiny scattered chips and losses as well as a bit of edge wear from handling and light scattered soiling on its verso.
