AN ANDROS TRACT MATHER, INCREASE. A Narrative of the Miseries of New-England, by reason of an Arbitrary Government erected there. Found on pages 29-34 of A Sixth Collection of Papers Relating to the Present Juncture of Affairs in England. [2], 34 pages; lacks the half-title. 8vo, modern calf; minor foxing. London: Richard Janeway, 1689

  • Notes: an adros tract. After becoming the British Colonial Governor in 1686, Andros began instituting controversial policies, including the establishment of an Episcopal Church. A series of 9 essays criticizing Andros's actions were published between 1688 and 1724, and have become known as the Andros Tracts. The First Edition of this work, published separately by Janeway the year prior, and the First American of 1688 are both exceedingly rare, making this 1689 edition the earliest obtainable one.
"[It] relates to the attempt to take away from the New England colonies by Quo Warranto and other proceedings the 'ancient Rights and Priviledges' which they had enjoyed under their charters. Complaint is made of the arbitrary acts of Sir Edmund Andros. In order to obtain relief from these evils, Increase Mather undertook a voyage to England. His paper contains a copy of the Petition to the King (probably drawn up by Mather), of John Gibson, aged 87, and George Willow, aged about 86, on behalf of their neighbours the inhabitants of Cambridge and New England asking for relief; also another petition by Increase Mather and two New England clergymen"--Church 714; Sabin 81492; Alden 689/169; Holmes 79C.
