AN AUTHOR'S LABOR OF LOVE (LEAF BOOK.) Dore, J. R. Extra-illustrated copy of Dore's "Old Bibles." Second Edition. Contains the insertion of approximately 50 original bible leaves and 30 facsimiles bound into the volume in a variety of ways including inlaid to size, tipped-in, mounted to blank leaves, or laid in. Rebound in tree calf with elaborately gilt spine with morocco lettering pieces, front joint cracked; photograph of Dore mounted to front endpaper. (London), 1888
- Notes: specially created book of bible leaves , likely made up for the author, Dore, as indicated by his photograph in the front and by an accompanying group of approximately 50 letters, mostly written to him. An enclosed letter from Muir Dawson of Dawson's Book Shop from 1956 supports the same. The letters, mostly from colleges, publishing houses, The British Museum, several clergymen, discuss the book and various projects upon which Dore was working. The group also includes descriptions and reviews of the book. Leaves include those from the English Language bibles of 1537, 1549, and 1551 Matthew's Bible; 1538 Coverdale, Hyll 1552, Genevan 1561; Thomson 1577, Bishops' Bible, and many others. A First Edition of the work also accompanies this lot, worn. should be seen.
