ANALYZING HER LOVE LIFE FREUD, SIGMUND. Autograph Letter Signed, "Freud," to Margarethe Rie, in German, a lengthy letter criticizing her decision to marry, arguing that she is attempting to silence her conscience, comparing her betrothed's pressure to rape, advising that her love life began with a beaten child fantasy and cautioning that marrying too soon will affect her art. 4 pages, two 4to sheets. With the original envelope. Vienna, 23 April 1921
- Notes: "I couldn't help but shake my head when I read your letter. It presents me with a new situation for which I am not prepared... It seems that he, the man, took the first misstep, from which the other aberrations ensue... he tries to extort from her a confession of immeasurable and boundless love instead of waiting until such intensity results spontaneously from common experience... Margarethe, inexperienced, infatuated, in love for the first time, tormented by high ideals, naturally goes along with this in the first flush of excitement. But then a voice makes itself heard... Then come suffering, despair... reconciliation and -- the repition goes on. I can picture that to drown out this voice, Margarethe decides to throw caution to the wind, to accelerate the marriage and thus prove to herself and to him that no such voice exists. But is it smart to silence such a voice before one has listened to it? Before one knows where it comes from, what empowers it?... So much for my attempt at explanation. Advice is harder; one has to deduce it for oneself from the explanation... the whole thing seems to be a fireworks display of unsatisfied passion..."
