- Notes: A very rare political image by Schnackenberg, whose work generally consisted of performers and cabarets in Munich. His ironic, decadent style was a precursor of the Mannerist Style of the 1920s. It was Art Deco without the recognizable geometric and cubistic elements, edging towards exaggeration and away from turn-of-the-century realism. Here, in the dark years after the war, within the shadow of the falling Austrian Empire and the political and social unrest that followed, Schnackenberg designed his only political poster. There are two separate text variations, this one warning against Anarchists, and the other against Bolshevics. These two radical social elements were obviously lumped together in people's minds; at least one other poster, by Engelhard, also features a knife-wielding, bomb-holding radical and also with two separate text variations. On the coatails of the First World War and the Russian Revolution, with Europe in shambles, fear of the spreading Anarchist/Bolshevic menace swept across the Continent. In this poster, a call against anarchy, straightforward intense wording states that "Anarchy is the helper of Reactionaries and hunger," a fear that is reinforced by the picture in which a blonde angel in red, an olive branch in one hand and a scroll (representing the "National consciousness") in the other, is protecting a crowd of Germans against the evil, crazed anarchist, depicted in black silhouette holding a bomb with a burning fuse. Not in Schnackenberg, Plakat Kunst p. 87, La Femme 90 (var).
