ANDRÉ KERTÉSZ (1894-1985) Chez Mondrian, Paris. 1926; printed 1967.

ANDRÉ KERTÉSZ (1894-1985)
Chez Mondrian, Paris. 1926; printed 1967.
Silver print, the image measuring 13 5/8x10¾ inches (34.6x27.3 cm.), the sheet 13 7/8x11 inches (35.2x27.9 cm.), with Kertész's signature, title, and negative date in pencil, his credit stamp, and his typed copyright with the date 1967, on verso.

  • Condition: André Kertész's iconic "Chez Mondrian", 1926; printed 1967, is overall in good condition. The tones of the print are rich and velvety, with creamy highlights and deep blacks.

Under close examination, the print evidences a few superficial inconsistencies on its surface. There are a few scattered circular specs of retouching in the area above the flower and in the staircase. While noticeable, they are not overly distracting. In strong raking light, we can also notice a cluster of very soft small half-moon marks in the middle-left quadrant, including a vertical wrinkle on its far-left edge, a soft half-moon crease above the hat, and two small and discreet wrinkles in the lower right edge. None of them result in emulsion loss. Located around the image area, they are hardly noticeable under typical viewing condition, and do not detract from the overall composition.

The narrow margins evidence a few specs of emulsion loss on their corners, and a cluster of tiny soft creases on the far lower left corner entering slightly the image area but are otherwise clean. The verso is clean, with Kertész's signature, title, and negative date in pencil, his credit stamp, and his typed copyright with the date 1967.
