Manhattan born, Ruellan (1905-2006) was a child prodigy, showing a precocious ability for drawing at a very early age. Already, by age 9, she had her drawings reproduced as illustration in the progressive magazine The Masses and been recognized by the renowned artist Robert Henri. She lived with her mother in Europe during the 1920s, returning to the United States, marrying and moving with her husband, fellow artist John Williams Taylor (1897-1983), to near the Woodstock Art Colony, in upstate New York, where she remained most her life.
