ANGELUS, JOHANNES. Astrolabium. over 400 woodcut illustrations, including 19 large depictions of astrological subjects, all hand-colored at an early date./span [174] (of [176]) leaves; lacking the 2 blanks at end. 4to, 228x158 mm, later 18th-century pigskin stained brown over wooden boards with monogram HL on covers, rebacked; marginal soiling through much of volume, scattered stains, blank lower outer corner of g2 excised and restored, title rehinged. English translation of the Latin captions to the occupational woodcuts written in upper and lower margins in 18th-century hand; 2 old emblematic engravings and woodcut of astrologer mounted on front endpapers.   • Notes: first edition of an important and amusingly illustrated astrological treatise, "comprising tables of the sign and degree of the ascendent for each hour and minute, equations of the astrological houses, images of the twelve signs with their properties, a table of the formation or stay of the child in the womb . . . significations of the hours of the planets, and . . . illustrations showing the occupations and types of men and women which various horoscopes would produce" (Thorndike).
