St. Augustine, Florida, is the oldest, continuously inhabited European settlement in the continental United States. The Castillo de San Marcos (as the fort was originally called) was constructed between 1672-1695 and is America's oldest masonry fort. Originally the northernmost outpost of the Spanish Empire in the New World, the fort both guarded the city and protected the Spanish ships returning to Europe with cargoes full of treasure. The imposing structure has walls that are 26 feet high, 14 feet thick at the base, and 9 feet thick at the top. In 1924 Fort Marion, as it came to be called, was designated as a National Monument (in that same moment President Coolidge also created four other National Monuments, including the Statue of Liberty). It was originally run by the War Department, but was transferred to the National Parks Service in 1933. In 1942 the name was officially changed back to the original Spanish.
