The Canadian Pacific's majestic ocean liner Empress of Britain (II) was sunk in 1940. She had been commandeered as a troop convoy and was attacked by German aircraft and submarines. In 1956 the Empress of Britain (III) was launched, and made her maiden voyage on April 20th between Liverpool and Montreal. She and her sister ship Empress of England were the first completely air-conditioned liners to cross the Atlantic. Canadian Pacific p. 76.
