The snow-capped volcanic peak in the Cascade Mountains is the centerpiece and namesake of a park that also contains glaciers, rivers, deep forests and lush meadows. In 1893, President Benjamin Harrison included the area in the Pacific Forest Reserve and in 1899, President William McKinley granted the area its National Park status. It was America's 5th National Park.
