Originally a German ship named The Vaterland, she was seized during World War I and renamed The Leviathan. Though not in fact "The largest ship in the world," (she was second to White Star's Majestic,) the ship was a headline-maker and was considered to be one of the best-known liners in the western world. In 1923, the United States Shipping Board transferred the ship over to the United States Lines.
