The sheer rugged beauty and majesty of this area in Southeastern Utah, prompted President Taft to declare it Mukuntuweap National Monument in 1909. Yet in these early years it was still extremely difficult to reach, involving arduous and dangerous hikes. In 1918 the name was changed to Zion, and the area was given National Park classification in 1919. Access to the Park improved with the help of the Union Pacific Railroad and the Civilian Conservation Corps who helped construct tunnels and roads within the Park itself.
