- Notes: first edition of an attack on the concept of Oriental despotism set forth in Montesquieu's 1721 Lettres Persanes and 1748 De l'Esprit des Loix. "Anquetil argued that there was no basis in fact for attributing despotism to Turkey, Persia, and India, where private property existed, and rulers were bound by codes of written laws. On the basis of inaccurate reports, which he was not trained to assess, Montesquieu had selected evidence to suit his own purposes... Anquetil asserted that this distorted image of the Orient had provided the excuse for Europeans such as the English in India to confiscate native lands and wealth"--Dictionary of the History of Ideas II, 12-13.
