ANSEL ADAMS (1902-1984) Tony Lujan, Taos Pueblo, New Mexico. 1929; printed circa 1930.

ANSEL ADAMS (1902-1984)
Tony Lujan, Taos Pueblo, New Mexico. 1929; printed circa 1930.
Silver print, the image measuring 7 5/8x4¾ inches (19.5x12.1 cm.), the mount 14x11 inches (35.6x28 cm.), with Adams' signature and negative date in pencil on mount recto, and his Carmel studio stamp with the title and negative and print dates in ink in an unknown hand on mount verso.

  • Condition: Ansel Adams' "Tony Lujan, Taos Pueblo, New Mexico" (1929; printed circa 1930) is in very good to excellent condition. The vintage print is dimensional and contrasty, with luminous highlights throughout the figure's face and beautiful inky blacks.

Overall, the print presents excellently, with a bright, clean surface. Upon close inspection in strong, raking light, however, it is possible to find only some trace linear rubs. These are subtle and superficial, and are not at all apparent under typical viewing conditions. A couple tiny and nearly imperceptible specs of retouching can also be found, one within the figure's eye.

The mount is lightly aged overall, with warming across much of the surface. A narrow brighter band can be found below the print, where the mat was exposed. Adams' extraordinarily neat signature and negative date can be found here, in pencil.

On mount verso, which is also overall slightly aged, Adams' Carmel studio stamp can be found with the title, print date, and negative date in ink. The notation "Remounted 1/30/70" also appears in ink, and an additional notation "Refixed & Washed 1-79 AR" in pencil at the lower edge. This notation is visible, but partially covered by a piece of masking tape at the far corner. The other three corners also have a strip of masking tape. Prior archival hinge tape appears at the top and bottom edge, again, only on verso.

Overall an exceptional vintage example of Adams' work, showcasing his unparalled print quality and compositional strength.
