  • Notes: Operation Highjump was an American scientific and military expedition which brought 13 naval vessels to the Ross Ice Shelf, established the base Little America IV, and flew over the South Pole. Rear Admiral Richard H. Cruzen was the commanding officer, while retired Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd, Jr. organized the expedition and served as technical commander. This archive includes: a carbon copy of a 5-page letter from "Hank" (Lieutenant Henry G. Aune?) to friend Jack, describing the last two months of the expedition, 29 March [1947] * 6 large photographs, each about 8 x 10 inches, mostly aerial views of the ships and their route * 9 smaller photographs, 4 x 5 inches, depicting the men and their living conditions, with one showing Admiral Byrd climbing out of a plane * 16 issues of the Penguin Special, the expedition''s newsletter, 3 to 29 January 1947 * 4 copies of the mimeographed Penguin Press, printed aboard the USS Mount Olympus, 28 February to 21 March 1947 * 2 copies of the newsletter Philippine Sea Line, printed aboard Byrd''s flagship, the USS Philippine Sea, the first American aircraft carrier to reach Antarctica, 12 and 26 January 1947. No issues of the Penguin Special or Penguin Press have been traced on OCLC or at auction.
