ANTHONY BARBOZA (1944 - )
Sam Gilliam, Wash D.C.

Chromogenic print, 1980. 114x114 mm; 4 1/2x4 1/2 inches, full margins. Signed, titled and dated in ink, lower margin.

In 1980, Anthony Barboza published Black Borders, his portrait series of artists, musicians and writers outlined with a distinctive black border that mimics that found in the negative. He photographed many artists, including Romare Bearden, Norman Lewis and Sam Gilliam, who appears here as if suspended inside one of his paintings. In reality, he is in his studio, lending a glimpse inside his workspace and creative process.
