ANTHONY CARO Untitled.

ANTHONY CARO
Untitled.

Brush and black ink on cream wove paper mounted on card stock, 1956. 590x460 mm; 23 1/4x18 1/8 inches. Signed and dated in pencil, lower left recto. Ex-collection the art critic and curator Lawrence Alloway, New York.

. Anthony Caro (b. 1924) began his artistic career in earnest studying under the modernist sculptor Henry Moore in the 1950's. Anthony Caro completely abandoned his figurative work, largely influenced by Moore, upon meeting the American sculptor David Smith in the early 1960's, who was much engrained in the Abstract Expressionist idiom. The present painting on paper comes at this transition from his figurative to entirely abstract work.
