- Notes: Cooper received the patch from Apollo 1 mission commander Grissom prior to the tragic Apollo 1 fire. The letter describes how the deaths of the crew came as a shock to himself, the Astronaut Office, and indeed the entire nation. The letter further states: "Gus was a very close friend. We were both selected as Mercury Astronauts in 1959 and later worked together on the Gemini Program."
