[ARABIAN NIGHTS.] Macnaghten, W.H. (editor). The Alif Laila or Book of the Thousand Nights and One Night,

[ARABIAN NIGHTS.] Macnaghten, W.H. (editor). The Alif Laila or Book of the Thousand Nights and One Night, commonly known as 'The Arabian Nights' Entertainments;' now, for the first time, published complete in the original Arabic, etc., etc. 4 volumes. Arabic text apart from titles in English (lacking in second volume; vol. 3 title wormed; final volume title loose, tears and worming with paper reinforcement on verso but no loss of text), and 4pp. subscribers' list in vol. 4. Tall 8vo (245 x 160mm), bound in 1/2 leather, spines in compartments, joints split and cracked on all but vol. 2, spines dried and heavily abraded, worming to top-edges of vol. 2; hinges reinforced, worming with loss of text to front and end leaves of first and last volumes, several with extensive loss and stabilized with translucent paper. Calcutta and London: W. Thacker and Co., and Wm. H. Allen and Co., 1839-1842

  • Notes: the rare arabic edition, printed in calcutta at the baptist mission press. Also known as the Calcutta II version, this is described on the title as "now, for the first time, published complete in the original Arabic, from an Egyptian manuscript brought to India by the late Major Turner Macan, editor of the Shah-Nameh." The original scattered Arabic texts were collected in four corpuses: the so-called Calcutta I or the Shirwanee edition (1814-18, 2 vols.), Bulaq or the Cairo edition (1835, 2 vols.), Breslau edition (1825-38, 8 vols.), and this, the Calcutta II or the Macnaghten edition. Considered the most comprehensive text of the Arabian Nights and is also the basis for the best known translations including the English editions by John Payne and Richard F. Burton. An extraordinary survival.
