Archive of 30 letters from a soldier to his mother Pvt. First Class Harold F. Rome, member of the 367th U.S. Infantry, 92nd "Buffalo" Division, writes about everyday activities from several places where he was stationed. Various lengths, some as long as 3 pages; with original envelopes. Includes pho-tograph of Pvt. Rome. SHOULD BE EXAMINED. Fort Devens, Mass.; undisclosed location in France; Camp Stuart, Newport News, Virginia, 1916-19 E400/600 Interesting sidelight on African-Americans' attitudes toward each other is revealed in one letter: "I know it kind of hurts my pride to go around with a colored fellow now. And he is much taller and darker than myself. But I suppose I have to be polite to him. I am colored myself, I know, but sometimes have an abhorrence for a colored person especially if they are dark."
