ARCHIVE OF PROFESSIONAL CORRESPONDENCE. An important and fascinating body of over 450 (mostly) Typed, and Autograph Letters, with
many Autograph Post Cards, all Signed, by professional writers of science fiction, horror or fantasy fiction, to George H. Scithers, editor of Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine between 1977-82, editor of Amazing Stories between 1982-86, and, with John Betancourt, editor of the revived Weird Tales from 1987 to present; or to Darrell Schweitzer, associate editor with Scithers on all three publications. 4to or smaller, including many 2-page, 3-page and 4-page typed letters, many on professional letterhead. The correspondence covers the period between 1975-91, and most of the Scithers correspondence has IASFM carbon replies attached. Several letters have editorial comments by Isaac Asimov in the margins or on attached notes, offering comments on plot construction, storytelling, etc. Vp, 1975-91 Content is excellent, and includes much revealing matter on writing and publishing, as writer and editor struggle with story outlines, character development, censorship issues, the economics of writing and publishing and the terms of contracts. There is also much writing on private matters, between business associates who are often close friends. Correspondents include: Brian Aldiss, Poul Anderson, Isaac Asimov, Robert Bloch, Ben Bova, Joseph Payne Brennan, Reginald Brentor, John Brunner, A. J. Budrys, David R. Bunch, Orson Scott Card, Terry Carr, Lin Carter, Jack Chalker, C. J. Cherryh, Jo Clayton, Hal Clement, Robert Chilson, Avram Davidson, L. Sprague DeCamp, Samuel R. Delany, Gordon R. Isaac Asimov, 2 February 1978: Also, if I'm going to have to live with `mother-flaking', I would rather have `mother-fucking' and save myself the trouble of having to translate it in my mind. Barry Malzberg, 30 March 1973: A panel discussion on a 3500 word story written in 45 minutes... the $50 for same being spent instantly for food for my helpless children?... mostly I don't think anything when I write except how many hours until the next scotch. Larry Niven, 8 April 1984: NIVEN'S LAWS: 1) Never throw shit at an armed man. You wouldn't think anyone would need to be told this. Does anyone remember the Democratic National Convention of 1968? Margaret St. Clair, 30 March 1975 about her contribution to To Serve Man (a cookbook): Probably the best way of dealing with tough Person would be to grind it fine and make Swedish Meat Balls out of it. Michael P. Kube-McDowell to Darrell Schweitzer, 25 April 1982: There's no point trying to develop a piercing rejection slip style. Terry Carr has that category locked up--Terry Carr rejection slips seem polite, but somehow they always leave me feeling as though my dog has shit on his rug. Joel Rosenberg to Darrell Schweitzer, 29 September 1984: "Even the good news of late has been dreadful. I got an absolutely adoring fan letter from a 23 year old girl in Florida, who told me that the only things that she and her circle of friends--all of whom live in the slums and work solely in dead-end jobs--live for are their nightly D&D [Dungeons and Dragons] games and my books.
