(ARCTIC.) Arthur M. Dodge. Album compiled by the photographer of Peary's sixth Greenland expedition. 12 silver print photographs, tipped to 12 mint-green album leaves, each with short pencil captions, plus cover leaf artfully titled "Greenland A.M.D. 1896." Ribbon-bound album without covers; minimal wear. Greenland, July to September 1896

  • Notes: Robert Peary's sixth Greenland expedition left Boston on 11 July aboard the ship Hope and returned in late September. They brought two scientific parties, one headed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and one from Cornell University. Peary's main objective on this expedition was to take away the Cape York meteorite, although this was not accomplished until the following year.

The compiler of this album was Arthur Malcolm Dodge (1862-1926) of Hampton Falls, NH, a member of the Boston party. He later described the expedition in "A Summer Voyage to Greenland" for the February 1898 "Granite Monthly," pages 64-71. 3 of the photographs in this album are among the illustrations for the article. His letters home to his mother are at New York Public Library, and a collection of 104 photographs from this expedition are at Dartmouth.

The first image shows 22 of the expedition's crew on the deck of the Hope. Peary's longtime Black lieutenant Matthew Henson is at bottom right. Others show the small settlements of Umanak, Ikerasak, and Miantilik (two showing residents of Ikerasak), and the Great Karajak Glacier (one with tiny explorers peering into a crevasse). Near the end is a man sketching on the ice, titled simply "Our artist"--apparently one of the expedition's artists, Russell W. Porter or Albert Operti.
