(ARCTIC.) Barrow, John. A Chronological History of Voyages into the Arctic Regions.

INSCRIBED TO CAPTAIN JOHN ROSS BY THE PUBLISHER (ARCTIC.) Barrow, John. A Chronological History of Voyages into the Arctic Regions. [6 of 8], 379, 48 pages. Folding map (partially hand-colored), text illustrations. 8vo, contemporary calf gilt, minor wear, tastefully rebacked with original backstrip laid down and original endpapers retained; lacking half-title, short closed tears to map; publisher's inscription on front free endpaper, Edinger bookplate. London, 1818

  • Notes: first edition. "From his influential position as second secretary of the Admiralty, John Barrow was the major nineteenth-century proponent of Arctic research. . . . Barrow's Chronological History was the cornerstone of his campaign for renewed Arctic exploration. With his power to appoint officers for such ventures, he was able to send thirteen expeditions to the North over the next thirty years"--Books on Ice 2.4.
The gift inscription reads "To Captain Ross with Mr. Murray's complts." It was apparently a gift from the book's publisher John Murray to Arctic explorer John Ross. Ross had recently left on his first Arctic expedition shortly before this book was published (as referenced on the title page), but published his "Voyage of Discovery" with Murray the following year. Barrow wrote a scathing review of Ross's 1819 expedition report, so this book was probably not one of Ross's favorite possessions. Lada-Mocarski 76; Sabin 3660.
