(ARKANSAS.) Manuscript transcript of various phases of the murder trial of 3 people charged in the beating death of "Becky, a Negro woman." 18 pages, small folio; gathered with silk ties at top. Ouachitah County, AK, October 1852-April 1853

  • Notes: A detailed transcript of the indictment, motion for continuance, change of venue and subsequent acquittal of 3 members of the Legay family, charged in the sadistic beating and murder of a Negro woman. The transcript goes into great detail, showing the deadly intent and savage nature of the attack.
The defense produced a number of "character witnesses" from Georgia and asked for a change of venue because "the minds of the inhabitants of this country are so prejudiced..." After 6 months, the defendants were acquitted.
