Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States. 8 folding plates. 95, [5] pages. 12mo, contemporary calf, worn, front board detached; minor wear and foxing, plates complete with no tears and only minor edge wear; early inked stamp and inscription on front flyleaf, longer inscription on title page. • Notes: Tenth edition. An early owner was apparently John R. Williams (1782-1854) of Detroit, who served as a militia artillery captain during the War of 1812. The flyleaf bears an inked stamp reading "J.R.W., 3rd Arty." John R. Williams went on to prominence in early Detroit, serving as its first mayor and as Major General of the state militia. He died on 20 October 1854, apparently leaving the book to his son Thomas Williams (1815-1862), a career Army officer then serving as captain in the 4th United States Infantry. Thomas initialed the book "T.W. 4 Art''y" on both the flyleaf and title page, and also inscribed the title page in the weeks after his father''s death: "N. York, Nov 1st /54, returned to Ft. Mackinac, Mich., Nov. 8 /54." Thomas Williams served as a Brigadier General for the Union during the Civil War; he was a notorious disciplinarian and drill enthusiast. He died at the Battle of Baton Rouge. Evans 27967.
