ARNOLD LOBEL (1933-1987) Frog and Toad chase paper in the wind.

ARNOLD LOBEL (1933-1987)

Frog and Toad chase paper in the wind.
Illustration possibly from the Frog and Toad Coloring Book, 1981. Ink on paper. 279 x 203 mm; 11 x 8 inches on 15 x 10 1/2-inch sheet. Unsigned.

Arnold Lobel never explicitly confirmed that the characters Frog and Toad were representative of his own experiences as a gay man. However, the series has been interpreted by many as having themes that resonate with LGBTQ+ experiences, particularly in the context of friendship and love between two male characters. Lobel came out to his family in 1974, four years after the first Frog and Toad book was published.
