- Notes: Charles Henry Hart (1847-1918) was a prominent New York-based art historian, specializing in the authentication of early American portraits. This important archive of his professional and family papers breaks down into these categories: * Approximately 200 letters to Hart from Thomas Benedict Clarke of New York City, 1907-1917. Clarke (1848-1931) was one of the most prominent art collectors of his day, and these letters are filled with details of Clarke's research. * A scathing letter to Hart from his late wife's sister Marian S. Daniels, 1913: "As you have stopped supporting your child, how should I know or understand that you would like to know of his welfare (with which you have had nothing to do) . . . If this does not satisfy you, go to court." * A series of 51 brief but charming letters from this young son to Hart, 1915-1918, with one letter from Hart to his son, [1918]. * 6 letters from Hart to Anita Beatriz Arabe (b.1892), 1916-1918. She became Hart's third wife in 1916. * 15 personal and legal letters to the widowed Anita Hart, 1921-1924. * Autograph receipt signed by Philadelphia silversmith Harvey Lewis, 1827. * Other papers, 1918-1924 and undated.
