ART KANE (1925-1995) Portrait of Joe Louis.

ART KANE (1925-1995)
Portrait of Joe Louis. Tri-color carbo print, the image measuring 22x14 3/8 inches (55.9x36.5 cm.), flush mounted to a thick board, with Kane's credit, title, date, and a numeric notation in ink and a label from The New York Cultural Center with Kane's typed credit, the title, the lender American Society of Magazine Photographers, and exhibition title Infinity '70, on mount verso. 1962

Provenance: The Estate of Richard T. Rosenthal, Philadelphia

  • Condition: Kane's portrait of Joe Louis is overall in good condition. The tri-color carbo print displays a subtle tonal range and a richness of color, as typical of the process.

Under close examination in raking light, the print evidences some surface impressions. They are primarily isolated small imperfections, which do not disturb the overall beauty and strength of the composition.

They include (as visible in our online catalog): a tiny spec of white residue in the background in the upper right quadrant, a cluster of small impressions with some emulsion loss below the protagonist's fist; also a tiny spec of emulsion loss at the very far edge of the image near the left corner, and a printing process discoloration mark at the bottom left edge. While apparent, these are not obtrusive to the image and don't disturb its viewing at all.

The surface of the print also evidences faint linear surface impressions and creases which are primarily confined to the edges or in the dark area of the lower quadrant. These are mostly visible when viewing the print under careful, strongly-lit viewing conditions.

Flush-mounted to a board, a few small and scattered chips may be found at the extreme edges. While apparent, these are not obtrusive to the image. There is also a period pinhole on each corner. The mount verso is slightly soiled.

A powerful low-angle composition of the American boxer.
